# Northman – Westside Golf Discs The Northman by Westside Golf Discs is positioned as a versatile distance driver with a speed of 10, designed to bridge the gap between controlled throws and maximum distance. With its larger diameter and slightly domed top, this disc generates extra glide, which pays off particularly at moderate arm speeds. Weight plays a crucial role: while versions around 177 grams closely follow the manufacturer’s specifications, lighter variants starting at 175 grams already exhibit significantly more turn on a flat release. The VIP and Tournament plastics offer different wear patterns—fresh Tournament discs start out overstable but gradually develop into understable workhorses for controlled distance shots. The Northman’s flight follows a classically neutral pattern with speed 10, glide 5, turn -1, and fade 2, though in practice, it plays with nuance. On a powerful release, the disc displays a gentle right-turning turn in the mid-flight phase before a reliable fade stabilizes the landing. This flight characteristic makes hyzer flips one of its strengths: when released on a slight hyzer, the disc elegantly flips up and glides out on a straight line. Stability varies noticeably between plastics—VIP versions remain predictable longer, while Tournament models break into turnover territory more quickly. For backhand throws, the Northman is an excellent choice for intermediate players who prefer a fan grip and aim for controlled distances between 90 and 110 meters. The disc forgives moderate mistakes and delivers repeatable lines on slight hyzer or flat releases. For forehand throws, however, it demands much more finesse—without precise power control, it tends toward uncontrollable turn. Advanced throwers appreciate the Northman for tight tunnel shots and long turnover lines, while beginners with sufficient arm speed can celebrate early success with straight distance throws.
