Overstable

The Innova "Viper" is an overstable fairway driver with a pronounced fade, ideal for precise utility throws and controlled distances up to around 100 meters. With a speed of 6 and fade of 5, it covers situations requiring a reliable left finish—whether in headwinds, skip shots, or dogleg holes. As one of the last major fairway drivers from the early 1990s, it offers an unusual flight profile that sits between the Banshee and Whippet, making it particularly appealing for players with a clean release. In DX plastic, it shows a bit more straight flight when new, while Champion and Star versions maintain their overstability for years. In flight, the disc behaves extremely predictably at medium arm speeds: it starts with minimal turn tendency and pulls left early. When thrown with power, it can briefly turn but remains fade-dominant, landing with a noticeable skip. The glide of 4 ensures it doesn’t drop abruptly but instead glides controllably into the landing zone. Thrown flat, the Viper achieves distances of 70 to 80 meters with a strong left finish; with a hyzer release, the flight path shortens for maximum reliability. For forehand throws, the Viper is a workhorse in the 80 to 100-meter range: it doesn’t forgive sloppy releases but rewards technically solid throws with precise fade. Intermediate players use it strategically for utility lines, while beginners often lack the spin to unlock its full potential. Advanced players value the disc for tournaments with wind or tight fairways where other discs become uncontrollable. If you're looking for a specialized overstable fairway driver that reliably fades left even after years, the Viper is an underrated tool for demanding situations.
