Groove
The Innova "Groove" is one of the most polarizing distance drivers on the market, targeting throwers with strong arm speed at Speed 13. As an overstable high-speed driver designed for maximum distance, it features an unconventional construction: grooves under the rim aim to enhance control but result in a unique flight pattern in practice. Champion plastic dominates this disc, though consistency between individual molds can vary significantly. It’s not intended for approach shots or technical fairway throws—its purpose lies squarely in maximum-distance situations. In flight, the "Groove" exhibits a moderate right turn (Turn -2) before fading out (Fade 2). The high glide rating of 6 promises extended hang time, but its flight behavior remains unpredictable. While some molds fly truly overstable, finishing reliably left even in headwinds, others behave noticeably more understable than the flight numbers suggest. As it wears in, the disc becomes noticeably flippy, turning harder to the right. The distinct rim shape noticeably influences flight—not always to the benefit of control. The "Groove" can be thrown backhand, but it demands precise timing and sufficient power. Hyzer lines work better with fresh molds than anhyzer releases, as the disc leans toward overstability. Advanced players with the necessary arm speed can achieve distances beyond 100 meters, though inconsistency between throws should be expected. For beginners and intermediate players, it remains a challenge—most disc golfers find more reliable alternatives among other high-speed drivers. Those who enjoy experimentation and can embrace quirks may discover an unconventional distance bomber.
